The Nayanars were from various backgrounds, including Channars, Vellalas, oilmongers, Brahmins, and nobles.Along with the twelve Vaishnava Alvars, they are regarded the important saints from Tamil Nadu. The list of the Nayanars was initially compiled by Sundarar (Sundararmurthi).
