About App
The Golden Temple is a Sikh Temple located in Amritsar, India. Popularly referred to as the Golden Temple (or God's Temple), the Temple is the most important place of worship in the Sikh faith, as well as one of the oldest of the Sikh gurudwaras. The fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das Ji, is the founder and planner of the city of Amritsar (then Ramdaspur), as well as the person who designed the temple. The city is often called Guru Di Nagri, both for this reason and because the Golden Temple is located in the town.
The Golden Temple was built in 1574 when the Mughal Emperor Akbar Shah gave the land as a wedding gift to the daughter of the third Guru, Guru Amar Das, who married Bhai Jetha, who later became the fourth Sikh Guru, Guru Ram Das Ji. Under the leadership of Guru Ram Das Ji, the pond was enlarged, the surrounding town expanded, and then the Temple complex was completed entirely during the reign of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev Ji.
