This is the second edition of our interactive Matses-Spanish-English dictionary, expanded with additional entries, definitions, and illustrations. It is designed to be used by Matses who are learning Spanish and by linguists and others who are interested in the Matses language. Definitions are provided in the regional Spanish of Loreto, Peru, in addition to the standard Spanish definitions, when these varieties of Spanish differ. With 4126 entries, 6065 definitions, 1797 sample sentences, 1374 scientific identifications of plants and animals, and 1503 original watercolor illustrations drawn by Matses artist Guillermo Nëcca Pëmen Mënque, this is one of the most comprehensive dictionaries ever compiled for an Amazonian language. It is the product of almost 30 years of linguistic and ethno-biological research by Dr. David W. Fleck, research coordinator of Acate Amazon Conservation, with the collaboration of Fernando Shoque Uaqui Bëso, Joaquin Tëca Rojas René, Luis Dunu Jiménez Dësi, and many other Matses speakers who contributed their expertise in the Matses language, culture and ecological knowledge.
